Make it Monday: Pretty clothes and happy sheets

20 04 2012

I have had to copy and republish this post as blogger ate half of it this week. Apologies if you have already read it.

I finally dusted off my sewing machine and started making in the past couple of weeks. It was fantastic and I had forgotten the sense of accomplishment I get from making something lovely, especially for people I love.

I started with something that I had been wanting to do for ages, make Kate a dress. I bought this ‘Sweet Dress‘ pattern from Lelia and Ben months ago and finally got round to making a dress. I was trying to save money and only get half a metre of the Michael Miller balloons fabric so I did the sleeves in a contrasting solid colour. I really like how it looks (the stripes in the background are from Mr C’s t-shirt not part of the dress!)

I had the bug then and I made two blankets for small boys birthday presents, then dragged out my pile of things to alter. First up was a double fitted sheet that I had dyed yellow a few weeks ago. I cut it in half and hemmed and added elastic to the new corners and made it into two sheets for Piran’s toddler bed. They are such a great colour and so sunshiney that they make me happy to change his bed.

Then I started on some old dresses that Kate had when she was very little indeed! She had grown out of them a long time ago but I thought they would work as skirts so I cut the tops off, tidied it up, sewed a channel, added some elastic and now she has two summer skirts.

Finally there were two small people’s birthdays to celebrate so I made two cushions with my favourite Bot Camp fabric. I can’t keep it forever and I hope that the small recipients will like it as much as I do. I didn’t have two cushion inserts the same size so there is a small one for the 1 year old and a slightly larger one for the 3 year old. I used this tutorial for a simple envelope cushion and I made two in under an hour. Brilliant presents.

If anyone else has been making and blogging about it please leave me a comment and I will add the posts to the end of this one. I love seeing what other people are doing and getting inspired.
